Edubuntu is a leading Linux operating system comes with the best open source applications with the mission to provide a cheap and intuitive solution to enhance the learning and teaching experiences in school.
Open-school platform
With the software platform provided by Edubuntu, we are aiming to deploy in each class a small client-server network with full access to the Internet and enable the active communication between the teacher and students.
What includes in the system
-Around 15-20 clients with keyboard, monitor and a disk-less computer
-Each client is connected to the Local Area Network (LAN) via the Ethernet port
-A server with fully installed softwares and also connects to LAN
-Now multiple students can use the softwares on the server at the same time, each with their own keyboard, monitor and CPU. The only different is they will use the virtual drive over the network which is located at the server.
How the system works
- Teacher is able to see what the students are doing in their computer, and also can send message to either individual student or broadcast it to the whole class without distracting them.
- Teacher can further guide the student on their computer by remote control feature
- File sharing and assignment marking is done over the local network with customized privileges
- Installing of new software is done in just only the teacher’s computer. Students with their client computers can use the software via the network
- Enable live demonstration by broadcasting the teacher’s screen with explanation to the students’ computers
- With the access to the Internet, any problem with the system can be fixed remotely without the need for technical staff to be present in the class.
Our approach
Since this is a voluntary project, we aim to coordinate with NGOs, organizations and individuals who are willing to donate their used computers to the project. Open-school platform operates on low performance computer units so most old computer models just perfectly match the requirements.
